Over the weekend, I picked up Let the Great World Spin, and was immediately drawn in. The New York described in its pages is gritty and forbidding, with layer upon layer of humanity, crime, culture, redemption, and disappointment. I’m also struck by the lead characters and their palpable sense of isolation. In a city of millions, they’re so alone, like the tightrope walker suspended between the Twin Towers. Each are inching carefully along, eyes forward, trying not to fall in. I can’t wait to see where the author takes us.
So glad you enjoyed your initial foray into the novel, Lea, and thank you for letting us know you were on your way (literally and metaphorically.) I hope you’re proceeding happily through the rest of the novel. I was moved by the novel’s ending (which I won’t give away here), except to say that to find a moment of great stillness with which to end a novel whose title is “Let The Great World Spin” is a wonderful (wondrous) achievement.
